Spider Veins

Overview

It is estimated that almost three-quarters of all adult women have spider veins. Although it is less common, men can develop Spider Veins as well. They are similar to Varicose Veins, but are smaller. Spider Veins appear on the surface of the skin. They can appear as short, fine lines or starburst type clusters and can be found on the thighs and calves as well as ankles and feet. Occasionally, they are found on the face. They may, however, be a symptom of venous insufficiency, a more serious health problem. Spider Veins are often a cosmetic concern and usually do not pose a significant health threat.

Treatment

We offer the very best method to eliminate Spider Veins. Sclerotherapy is very effective and there is no downtime. A safe chemical solution is injected into the veins through a tiny needle, irritating the lining and causing the veins to collapse and gradually disappear.  In some cases, Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) may be used.

Causes

Spider veins are caused by abnormal blood flow and weakening of the blood vessel wall in the affected veins. Any condition or activity that puts pressure on the veins can contribute to their development. Causes of Spider Veins include genetics, pregnancy, prolonged standing and sitting, venous insufficiency, injury and high pressure from Varicose Veins.

Tests & Diagnosis

The diagnosis is based on the appearance of the leg veins.  During a physical exam, the doctor will check your legs and may request that you have a Venous Sonogram or Doppler test to check the blood flow in the superficial veins near the skin’s surface as well as the deep veins.

When to contact a doctor

While unsightliness is the most common reason for removal, Spider Veins may also be removed to alleviate problems with restless legs, aching, burning, and/or cramps. Contact your doctor if you experience any of these problems or if you simply wish to improve the appearance of your legs.

We are proud to introduce Ultherapy, a safe non-surgical ultrasound treatment that is the ONLY non-invasive treatment cleared by the FDA to actually lift skin. This is a non-invasive alternative to a facelift that uses the body’s own regenerative response to gently and gradually lift skin on the eyebrow, under the chin and on the neck, and smooth lines and wrinkles on the chest, by stimulating collagen regeneration.
